College Bosses Welcome Union Support for Merger Consultation

Management at James Watt College, Clydebank College and Reid Kerr College, who are currently engaged in a public consultation on their planned merger, have welcomed a briefing paper issued to EIS/FELA members by branch officials urging them to get involved in the merger process.

The paper offered broad support for the vision of the new college which was laid out in the consultation document “Our Vision, Your Views” and encouraged members to attend the various consultation events currently taking place in all three colleges.  The paper also indicated support for Regional Lead Michael Yuille’s commitment to a vision of a college which meets the needs of students, employers and local communities.

Whilst support for the merger was evident, concern was expressed by branch officials over possible reductions in student places and college provision for more vulnerable groups.  A spokesperson for the Colleges stated “Management share the concerns expressed by EIS/FELA about the potential impact on provision against a backdrop of severe government funding cuts and we will work together to balance funding availability and prioritised provision as set out by the Scottish Government. We think the merger presents a significant opportunity to maximise limited resources and realise efficiencies and we are delighted at the support the EIS have given to the consultation process. “
