Irish
Americans encouraged to join international gathering
Irish
Americans are being encouraged to go back to their roots as plans are unveiled
for a major clan gathering in Ireland.
One
of Europe’s oldest and most celebrated clans – O’Neill – have announced details
of a four-day long celebration of their culture and history.
The
event, which takes place between the 22nd and 26th May
2013, is designed to bring together O’Neill family members from around the
globe to share stories and celebrate an incredibly rich and diverse clan
history.
Sean
O’Neill of The Association of O’Neill Clans said: “The O’Neill Dynasty history
dates back to the 10th century and one of the first High Kings of
Ireland. Since then our clan has played prominent roles in the development of
Ireland, Europe and latterly the United States of America.
“O’Neills
span across the globe and we’re hoping this international gathering will bring
many of them together to learn more about their roots and the stories that
chart the incredible highs and lows of our clan history.”
O’Neill
clan members last met in Paris, France in 2010 where a decision was made to
hold future gatherings. In 2013 the family is going back to where it all began
with a series of lectures and musical and dramatic performances across the
emerald isle.
Sean
added: “I would urge all O’Neills in the USA to come to Ireland in 2013 and
join the celebrations. In return we’ll offer our famous hospitality and a real
opportunity to strengthen clan family ties and make lifelong friends.”
The
four-day long event will take in visits to various historical O’Neill sites
including The Hill of The O’Neill in Dungannon, County Tyrone; the coronation
site of The O’Neill in nearby Cookstown; walking tours of Armagh – a city with
a rich O’Neill heritage; and a trip to Ireland’s capital city Dublin. To assist US tourists with the journey home
to Ireland, The Association of O’Neill Clans is offering a full package in partnership
with holiday operator Brack Tours. The package includes transport from Dublin
Airport, hotel accommodation, meals and access to the full programme of
entertainment on offer at the gathering.
