Former James Watt College Music student behind the curtain of Scotland’s performing arts

PRESS RELEASE
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
7th November 2012

A former Music  student from James Watt College is celebrating the expansion of his very own production company, providing stage crews as well as lighting and sound teams for some of Scotland biggest events.

Jason McSwan set up ‘Whatever Crew’ around twenty years ago but was able to develop the business further after studying at James Watt College. Jason leads a team of 20 based in Greenock who provide support for events across the country.

Commenting on how the Music  course at James Watt College helped him achieve his dream job, the 38 year old from Glasgow said: “The course at James Watt was really a key part in teaching me how to be productive and how important networking and working alongside others would be in the industry.

“Following my studies I was able to expand and develop my own business which specialises in providing stage crew, site crew, touring crew and even forklift operators for concerts and events around Scotland. We are also involved in providing lighting and sound technicians from small events to stadium shows.

“While I was at James Watt College I met a lot of interesting people many of whom I still know today, the importance of which I can’t stress highly enough to anyone thinking about starting the course. Having a future in this industry relies heavily on building good relationships with people and making good impressions. If I could give advice to anyone starting the course it would be to try and get as many contacts and experience as possible.”

During his time at James Watt College, Jason worked closely with lecturer  Andrew McDermid who he says was a great inspiration. The lecturer said: “Jason was already involved in the live music industry when he came here but hopefully he gained an understanding of other aspects of the business.

"The various music courses at James Watt College are delivered by industry specialists, the idea is that you get a value added education. We are trying to develop students that are employable within the industry".

James Watt College offers a wide range of courses for people looking to break into the music industry. The College is currently recruiting students for the NC Music  course starting in November. Visit www.jameswatt.ac.uk or telephone 01475 724433 for further information.
