James Watt College launches new course to tackle youth unemployment

A new course designed to help young people break into the sports and fitness industry is being launched at James Watt College.

The Award in Exercise Studies is part of the College’s Employment FOCUS Programme – an initiative to help young people struggling to find employment in North Ayrshire and Inverclyde. Aimed at 16 – 24 year olds, the vocational courses are specifically tailored to provide the experience and skills required to make students ‘work ready’ in their chosen field.

Gordon Stewardson, Enterprise Officer at James Watt College, said: “The Award in Exercise Studies is one of six core areas we’re gradually rolling out. It’s suitable for anyone aged 16 to 24 who is currently out of work and who’s interested in improving their performance, enhancing their personal development and gaining an understanding of the benefits of exercise and fitness.”

Throughout the 18 week course, which is expected to get underway later this month, students will study specific units exploring the health and fitness industry. The course also includes a certificate in Employability which is backed up with work experience designed to help young people towards employment Gordon continued: “While we’ll be focussing heavily on gaining vital industry knowledge, the core of this and our other Employment FOCUS Programme courses is on developing ‘workability’ skills. We’ll teach young people everything they need to know about developing as part of a team, communicating more effectively and achieving their goals.”

The Employment FOCUS Programme’s six subject areas available across the North Ayrshire and Inverclyde campuses of James Watt College are:

-          Retail
-          Customer Service
-          Sport & Leisure
-          Health & Social Care
-          Construction
-          Engineering

The Retail and Customer Service Focus courses were launched earlier this year and they have been such a success, the college is set to offer them again. Applications are now being taken for the Sport & Leisure, Retail and Customer Service courses starting at the end of November. The remaining subjects are expected to commence in January 2013.
