James Watt College students help ‘Make A Difference’

James Watt College has helped to raise a smile and make a difference as part of a volunteering drive.

Students from the college’s NPA Cosmetology Hairdressing course organised a social enterprise event within the Finnart Campus to publicise local charities, clubs and groups.

The event, on the 31st October, followed Make A Difference Day, where individuals, groups and charities across the UK are encouraged to do all they can to raise money and awareness of good causes. As well as publicising local groups, the students dressed up in Halloween costumes and invited students from the NC Sound Production course to perform live DJ sets.

Lecturer Emma Maxwell said: “At James Watt College, we’re always keen to teach students about the values of working within and supporting the wider community. The students were really keen to get involved and truly embraced it. Following an information session to promote Make A Difference Day, they were given the responsibility of organising the event, working with external stakeholders, carrying out risk assessments, booking venues and enlisting the help and support of others.

“As well as being great fun, it was a genuinely rewarding experience for them. It’s helped to build their confidence, given them a detailed understanding about working in partnership with other people and organisations and helped to develop their leadership qualities.”

As part of their preparations for the event, the students worked in close collaboration with Volunteer Centre Inverclyde – a project of Inverclyde Community Development Trust.

Hairdressing student Caitlynne Kelly, 18, who helped organise the event, added: “We had loads of fun and we got lots of people to sign up to find out more about volunteering. It was such a good cause and I feel as if I learned a great deal from it.”

As well as gaining vital skills, the students will each be rewarded with a nationally recognised Saltire Award – the honour recognises young people who go the extra mile by volunteering and helping their local communities.
